Coming Home in Fryslân: In the Footsteps of Your Family
Sometimes in my work… there are moments I will never forget. Guiding guests to the places where their family history once began remains the most beautiful part of what I do. Just like the journey with Harry. He came to the Netherlands with one clear wish: to find the estate where his mother had spent part of her childhood. For Harry, this was not about dates or dry facts, but about a tangible connection to his Dutch ancestors.
A Search Ten Years in the Making
Did you know that Harry and his mother had tried to find the house together ten years earlier? They walked through Fryslân, but surprisingly never found it. This time, we set out together with Your Dutch Roots—and this time, we succeeded in finding it.
When Harry finally saw the house, I saw the emotion on his face. Years of family stories fell into place in a single moment.
Exploring Fryslân
Our journey took us through Fryslân (Friesland). Many of my guests have ancestral roots here. As we walked through the village, past the church and along the path toward the estate, Harry shared memory after memory told to him by his mother. Every step carried anticipation. You can almost feel history beneath your feet.

And there it was: the house where his mother had partly spent her childhood. The current residents warmly welcomed us into their garden. Harry was able to ask questions and hear beautiful stories about what life used to be like there.
That is exactly the magic of a heritage journey through the Netherlands: generations coming together, right at the place where it all happened.
Photos with Personal Meaning
The joy on Harry’s face said it all. He kept taking photos—not for social media, not for quick snapshots, but for deeply personal memories. Each image became another piece of the puzzle of his family story.
An Unexpected Discovery
After all these impressions, we ended the morning with coffee and a traditional Frisian lunch. Of course, we reflected on everything we had seen and heard.
But the day wasn’t over yet. That afternoon would take us to another place, another village—a surprising piece of Harry’s family puzzle, which I will share in my next blog.
The Most Beautiful Moment
Harry’s face, full of joy and emotion, is what stays with me most. His enthusiasm reminds me again of my mission: helping people discover their Dutch roots and find the places that shaped their family stories.
I continue to find it incredibly special to guide people to their ancestral places, and to help create memories that last a lifetime.
