Your Dutch Roots journal

Roots Journal — your travel companion as you discover your Dutch ancestors

You’ve planned your trip to the Netherlands, perhaps after years of digging through archives and old photographs. And then suddenly there you are: in the village where your great-grandparents lived, sitting at the table with distant relatives you’ve never met before, or in a cemetery where you finally find the name you’ve been searching for so long.

These are the moments you want to capture. Not only once you’re back home and the details are already fading, but whilst they’re happening.

The Your Dutch Roots Journal has been created for your personal quest to discover your Dutch roots. To discover, experience and record what you come across along the way.

What will you find in this journal?

You’ll start with your own family tree — a way to record your Dutch ancestors: on the left-hand page, you’ll fill in your parents and ancestors; on the right-hand page, there’s space for those who come after you — your children and grandchildren. This way, your entire family line — past and future — is all in one place.

Using the map of the Netherlands, you can mark where your family comes from and which places you’ll visit during your journey. Next to it is a blank page for your own notes — to fill in however you like.

There are lists and little tasks to help you get started. Make a note of the places you want to visit, the people you meet, what you learn about your family and which typical Dutch dishes you’ve tasted. And perhaps you can trace your entire family history

Between the pages, you’ll find four quotes in English, personally selected — little reminders of what this journey is all about: following in your family’s footsteps and discovering your own story.

Make the journal entirely your own

The many dotted pages give you complete freedom to record your journey in your own way. Write down the stories you hear. Stick in photos, tickets, receipts or other little mementos. Draw, make notes or jot down anything you absolutely don’t want to forget. The sturdy 160 gsm paper has been specially chosen for this purpose: it’s pleasant to write and draw on, even with a marker, without the ink bleeding through.

There’s no right or wrong way to use this journal. It will become a collection of your discoveries, encounters and memories.

Because ultimately, it’s not just about the places your ancestors came from. It’s about the stories, people and moments that together make up your family history.

Who is this journal for?
